Lifetime

Written on Valentine's day, 2002 and was one of the last poems I ever wrote...

I might have spent a lifetime
Cradled within your arms
And you within mine
As we spend our time
Lost in our love
Holding you in the dark
On a cold winter's night
Or watching the rain strike
Against the windowpane
I might have spent a lifetime
Looking into your eyes
Listening to your voice
Hearing your heartbeat
As we lay amongst the trees
Watching the golden leaves
As a brisk autumn wind
Brings us closer together
And we swear that we never
Would ever say goodbye
I might have spent a lifetime
With your head on my shoulder
Listening to Marvin Gaye
As we danced the night away
With your hands in mine
Watching the sun rise
Waiting for the next sunset
So we could watch the stars
As they light up the night sky
Or take in a fireworks show
On the Fourth of July
I might have spent a lifetime
Preparing for that special day
Where you and I become we
Like two peas in a pod
Until we are old and grey
Watching our grandkids play
Maybe that is what will be
Together until the very end
I might have spent a lifetime
Just to find out
